This image was cropped to remove scanned negative border, and then geo-referenced in ArcGIS 9.3 using GoogleEarth to find physical features such as river conjunctions and road junctions. This CORONA satellite image was made available from the U.S. Geological Survey. |
| Abstract |
dc.description.abstract |
This CORONA panchromatic satellite image covers an area extending from Hadj Yelane to western edge of Ayn al Arab (Jazira), Syria. Carablus is also in this image. A segment of the River Euphrates is also in the image, and with this image predating the construction of the Euphrates Dam at Tabqa, Syria and the Ataturk Dam to the north in Turkey, this makes the image especially important for identifying archaeological sites situated along the River Euphrates which would have become inundated with the formation of Lake Assad. The ground resolution is approximately 2 metres. This zipped image dataset also includes a screenshot showing a section of the image's footprint, which corresponds to the full extent of the captured images. There are four image segments associated with the full USGS provided footprint (DS1107-2138DA066_66_a.tif, DS1107-2138DA066_66_b.tif, DS1107-2138DA066_66_c.tif and DS1107-2138DA066_66_d.tif). This image corresponds to DS1107-2138DA066_66_a.tif There is no cloud cover associated with these images. Please note that the spatial accuracy is not reliable and may need to be geo-referenced again, though this was done to situate the image over the corresponding ground area. The RMS for this 0.01241. Users of this image will be able to identify areas using built environments and features of the physical landscape. |
